The 7-pin round RV connector (SAE J2863) is the standard trailer interface for travel trailers, fifth wheels, horse trailers, and heavy-duty towing across North America. The round 7-pin design provides all four basic lighting circuits plus electric brake control, 12V auxiliary power for charging the trailer battery, and a reverse/backup light circuit. The connector uses heavy-duty blade contacts rated at 40 amps on the power circuits and features a center ground pin surrounded by six function pins in a standardized arrangement. The vehicle-side connector typically includes a spring-loaded cover for weather protection. Required for any trailer with electric brakes or an onboard battery system, the 7-pin round is the most common heavy towing connector and is pre-installed on most pickup trucks and SUVs equipped with a tow package.
